Professional, caring and a team player, Dr Johan Smalberger works in private and public settings to deliver value-added diagnostic and interventional radiology services. He also enjoys teaching and developing resources for patients and healthcare providers. He has a growing interest in Artificial Intelligence and environmental sustainability and their importance in the future of radiology.

Johan is a highly qualified and experienced medical professional. He began working in radiology in 2015 and joined Imaging Associates in 2021. Once an elite athlete, Johan has personal experience with high-level performance, injury, rehabilitation, and return to competition after surgery. Before joining Imaging Associates, he worked as a Consultant Radiologist at Middlemore Hospital and the SRG Specialist Radiology & MRI group. Before settling on a career in radiology, Dr Smalberger worked as a general surgical registrar and resident in orthopaedics and surgical specialties. He also worked as a research physician in clinical trials from first-in-human to Phase IV studies.

Johan graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Science in 2006. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery in 2011, also from the University of Auckland. In 2013 Johan undertook postgraduate studies in surgical anatomy at the University of Otago. He has a Master’s Degree in Health Science, focused on radiology. At the end of 2020, Johan became a Fellow with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR). His final year of specialist training focused on MRI and interventional radiology. In June 2022, he completed a one-year fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at Imaging Associates.
