Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by a build-up of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals within the joints. When uric acid levels become too high, sharp urate crystals can form and trigger sudden, intense attacks of pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness.
Gout flare-ups most often affect the big toe, feet, ankles, knees, or hands.
Without proper diagnosis and ongoing management, repeated attacks can lead to progressive joint damage over time.

Although gout is common, identifying it accurately can be challenging. Traditional imaging methods such as ultrasound or X-ray may not clearly show early urate crystal deposits, especially between flare-ups. Symptoms can also overlap with other types of arthritis or joint conditions.
This is why dual-energy CT (DECT) can be so valuable.

Dual-energy CT (DECT) uses two X-ray energy levels to distinguish urate crystals from bone, cartilage, and other tissues, allowing gout to be detected more accurately than with standard CT or X-ray. At our Balaclava and Drouin clinics, we offer DECT services for high-quality gout assessment, helping your GP or specialist confirm a diagnosis quickly and guide effective treatment.

Your GP or specialist may refer you for DECT if:
A referral from your GP or specialist is required. Once you have a referral, head to Imaging Associates Balaclava or Drouin to book your appointment.
