How does X-Ray Imaging work?

X-Ray technology involves a small amount of ionising radiation from the X-Ray tube being directed to the body part being examined. This passes through the body onto the detector plate which then allows an image to be produced on the computer screen.

  • X-Rays are particularly effective for visualising bones, as they absorb radiation more readily than soft tissue. Internal organs are much harder to visualise using general X-Ray imaging due to the nature of the tissue.
  • This is why when looking at some organs like stomach, small bowel and large bowel you need to use a contrast ingested by the patient to see them more clearly.

What X-Ray services are offered?

General X-Ray

Our Box Hill clinic offers a range of X-Rays, which are effective in the investigation, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing patient care for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar and Sacrococcygeal spine imaging
  • Conditions affecting the Shoulder, Clavicle, Humerus, Elbow, Forearm, Wrist Hand and Fingers
  • Chest, Ribs and sternum
  • Abdomen
  • Pelvis, Sacroiliac joints and Hip
  • Conditions affecting lower extremities including Femur, Knee, Tibia and Fibula, Ankle, Foot and Toes

Specialised X-Ray

  • Dental Imaging X-Rays including Orthopantograms (OPG), Lateral Cephalogram, and Conebeam scans. OPG examinations are useful in assessing tooth alignment, impacted teeth, infections, trauma, and pre and post-implant surgery evaluations. Your dentist will generally request an OPG scan prior to extractions and in the case of infection, tooth alignment, caries, impacted teeth, trauma and TM joints.
  • Lateral Cephalograms are performed to assess the alignment of the bite and are mainly performed in younger patients.
  • Conebeam CT scans are performed to assess bone height and width prior to dental implant surgery as well as post-surgery, to check the position of the implants. Conebeams are primarily referred by dental specialists. This type of scan is eligible for a Medicare rebate if referred by a specialist or GP.
  • Fluoroscopy Imaging is a type of technique that uses X-Rays to show moving images in the body. Using fluoroscopy, we conduct barium studies, which aid in diagnosing conditions such as swallowing disorders. It is used prior to and post operatively for patients undergoing weight loss surgery. Our fluoroscopy-guided joint injections ensure precise needle placement for effective pain management and weight-bearing long leg and full spinal imaging can diagnose joint issues and spinal abnormalities.
  • DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) Imaging: DEXA scans most often involve scanning the lumbar spine and hip to evaluate bone density levels, which is essential in assessing the risk or progress of osteoporosis. Medicare rebates are available for eligible patients, including those over 70 years of age. Patients under 70 years of age who have been diagnosed with specific conditions including low traumatic fracture, early onset menopause, gut malabsorption conditions, hypothyroidism, liver disease or renal disease can be eligible for a DEXA and may claim a Medicare rebate.

What is the cost of an X-Ray?

At our Box Hill Clinic most X-Rays are bulk billed, and while we do recommend making an appointment for your procedure, for most X-Rays, whenever possible we will do our best to accommodate walk in patients.

What preparation is required for an X-Ray?

No preparation is required for general X-Ray examinations; for most X-Rays your clothing can be left on.

  • You may be asked to change into a gown if the area being examined is obscured by metal zips, buckles, clips or belts.
  • Similarly, you may be asked to remove any jewellery or body piercings if they are in the field being examined.
  • Where there are pre-procedure requirements for specific procedures you will be fully informed about these at the time of making your appointment.
